Myra Lou Blevins Buhrmester,
75, passed away Saturday morning at St. Bernard’s Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Jonesboro,
Myra attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and Holy Angels Academy. She
was a 1964 graduate of Jonesboro High School and attended Arkansas State
University where she studied journalism.
She met E.J. Buhrmester,
the love of her life, in August of 1964, and they married on July 3, 1966, at
Fisher Street United Methodist Church in Jonesboro, where Myra was a lifelong
member. E.J. and Myra celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in July of
2016, with a reception at Community of Christ Church in Jonesboro. The couple
attended services there at E.J.’s home church in later years.
Myra and E.J.’s greatest joy in life was their
daughter, Shannon Buhrmester Young, son-in-law, Jason
Young, and grandchildren, Sierra Young, 15, and Anthony Young, 10, all of
Temecula, California.
Myra was an avid fans of
sports on all levels. She played volleyball for many years on “The
Jonesboro Sun” women’s volleyball team.
While attending ASU, she began work at “The
Sun” as an assistant to Grace Witherspoon, whose “Social Whirligig” column ran
in the paper until the death of Ms. Witherspoon. Myra continued to write and
edit the column until her retirement, after 42 years at the newspaper. She was
devoted to the Troutt family and was also a friend
and mentor to the many writers and staff members she worked with over her many
years at the newspaper.
Myra had served on the Board of Directors of
the Jonesboro Parks and Tourism Department and The Salvation Army. She was a
volunteer for Cardiology Associates, an honorary member of Alpha Gamma Delta
sorority at ASU, and a volunteer at the Phil and Flo Jones Hospice House in
Jonesboro.
In addition to her husband and family, she is
survived by her sister, Doris Blevins Wade (Ronnie) of Jonesboro, and a host of
beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
James W. and Dorothy Dowdy Blevins and one sister Claudia Ming.
A memorial service to celebrate Myra’s life
will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gregg-Langford Bookout
